In the meantime, my single slave follower had helped me defeat enough bandits that he leveled up into…a farmer. I had to do a quick side quest to prove myself, and upon completion I was given a good sum of money to go out and recruit a 15 man warband, and (more importantly), the Jarl gave me the king’s permission to recruit men in all the Frisian holdings, so no bribing the headmen required! I found the Jarl, and not only was he already planning to deal with the threat of the raider, but he liked my responses enough to give me a chance to be in on the plan with his men. Last night was far more productive! I remembered that my first quest was to find a particular Jarl and speak to him about killing the Viking raider who murdered the crew of the ship I had been travelling on. I feel like it will be several play sessions before I have even a small following of low level recruits. They sucked, but they could be trained and improved. In the old M&B Warband, all you had to do was walk into a village and ask if anyone was looking for adventure, and you’d have 3-5 recruits. Not only do you need to have enough reputation to recruit in towns and villages, but you usually have to bribe an official to recruit or pay an outrageous initial fee to hire mercenaries. It’s so difficult to recruit in Viking Conquest. I’m probably ready to pay to recruit some villagers now. I’ve traded a few more times, made around 4000 coins, upgraded my armor and shield, and done a few quests for head men and jarls.

It’s so damn hard to get followers in the early game that a free one was too good to pass up. I lost reputation with the village the quest came from, but I’ll do another quest for them and get it back later. I offered him the chance to join me instead as my first recruit, and he accepted. I found said slave, who claimed his master beat him regularly and would kill him if I brought him back. In one of the other villages the head man wanted me to find an escaped slave. I set out once more on a quest to find more wool to buy and sell. SCORE! With that and the proceeds form the sale of my extra bandit loot I was able to trade up to a long handled axe that did far more damage and had a bonus vs. I then trekked to the main city in the Frisian region and sold the wool for a cool 670 coins. NOTE : You start with 100, but if you talk to the head man in the first town, and choose the proper conversation tree choices, he’ll give you another 80 coins because you’re a likeable guy. In one of the villages I was able to buy Wool for less than the 180 staring coins I had. I equipped the best set of clothing, the second bandit’s shield, and his puny axe, and set out once more. I was able to loot both sets of clothing the bandits wore, and oddly a third, better set as well. So don’t loot on the battlefield kids (except for survival purposes). The looted weapon/armor did not appear in my inventory either, the game just ATE them.

Of note, in the post-battle loot I DID NOT receive the looted shield and spear I used during the fight, only the shield and little axe the second bandit had. I was then able to loot his shield and spear thing, which made the second bandit much easier to defeat. Blocking without a shield was impossible, so I had to kite the bandit, try to flank him using bits of the environment, and stab him about 10 times, but he went down. It must have looked like something out of Benny Hill as I ran around the bandit camp jumping between tents and over wagons and stacks of barrels until I got one of the bandits stuck on something, making it a one on one fight with the other bandit. On the fourth try, I was actually able to win a fight with 2 bandits. They dragged me around a bit, let me go, and I was immediately attacked by another three bandit types. They had axes and shields, I had what appears to be a pocket knife.

Attempted to make some cash by buying salt a the Salt Mine where it should logically be it’s cheapest, then selling it a good distance away, only to find that all the towns in the region pay less for salt then it costs from the mine. With no weapons or shield and no money I was pretty much screwed. Mugged by bandits upon setting foot in the first town, who then took most of my cash and dragged me around awhile. This is hands down the ugliest character I’ve ever played in a video game. My initial impression was “man, was Warband this ugly? I don’t remember Warband being this ugly?!” I’m not even sure why they bother with a character features screen, all the choices range from freakishly-inhuman to Quasimodo. Bought this in the Steam Autumn Sale and fired it up over the past couple of evenings.
